Not a bad time for a team of two

Feeling unusually energetic, we played two games back-to-back at Sudbury Escape Rooms. This is our review of the Rob the Bank 2 escape room.

Rob the Bank 2 Escape Room storyline

Your adventure kicks off in the back of the van that crashed through the wall of the bank you just robbed (Rob the Bank 1).

It’s getaway time and the van wont start.

You step into the street outside, you’re not just entering another game; you’re walking onto an immense, immersive town set that feels like stepping into another reality.

Here, live actors greet you, each playing a part in the intricate tapestry of your mission. They’re not just characters; they’re part of the puzzle, guiding and challenging you through a series of interactive challenges that test your wit, resolve, and ability to work as a team.

Spanning 62 minutes, “Rob the Bank 2” is so expansive and detailed that it includes an interval halfway through, giving you and your team a moment to regroup and stop for a moment.

What did we think of Rob the Bank 2 escape room in Sudbury?

Many years ago we played the original Rob the Bank game at the Maldon Escape Rooms and really enjoyed ourselves. And much like Eerie Motel, Rob the Bank 2 has been on our “to do” list for some time.

The game begins in the back of a van – exactly where the original game finished. Once the obligatory intro video completes, the door opens and you’re standing in a detailed street scene. All you have to do is figure out how to locate the six coins needed to pay to recharge your broken down getaway van…

There’s a church, a pub, a small hotel, a tattoo parlour, a public toilet, a takeaway shop and “the worst escape room in the country”. The playing space is huge. The game takes in all of these venues in a mad rush against the clock. Escape Rooms Sudbury claims that Rob the Bank 2 is the largest escape room in the South East of England and they are probably right.

The story and game plays flows quite well once you figure out where to start. Annoyingly, we really struggled to get started and had to ask for an early clue. After that, the story really picked up.

Unusually, the Rob the Bank 2 escape room is 62 minutes long. Why? Because there is an hilarious interval mid-way through the game. We advise taking a seat and letting the madness wash over you because you really won’t expect what happens next.

There are some genuinely novel puzzles in this game and you will have to work well together if you hope to escape. This is one room where you may benefit from having a larger team.

We did manage to recharge the van and successfully flee the scene of the crime. And we had an awesome time along the way.

Criticisms? Quirks?

There’s nothing to criticise about the Eerie Motel escape room. The only surprise is that the Rob the Bank 2 escape room hasn’t won any awards.

As part of the Know Escape Franchise, Rob the Bank 2 contains elements that appear in their other games. There are Easter eggs scattered throughout the playing space that reference characters from other games which is quite amusing.

Sudbury Escape Rooms bill this as a game for up to ten players. Given the huge playing area, there’s plenty of physical space. But like many games, if the team is too big, some people will end up standing around doing nothing while three or four cram into a small space to look at a tiny padlock.

The Rob the Bank 2 escape room – conclusion

We have waited years to play this room – and the wait was worth it. With a building the size of a warehouse to work with, the team at Sudbury Escape Rooms have gone all out. And just because there’s plenty of space doesn’t meant mean that they have cut any corners or skimped on the details.

Everywhere you look, there is something new to discover – even if the details are not directly related to the game. Rob the Bank 2 may be the closest we have come to the exceptional games available on mainland Europe.

We talked about the game all the way home, proving Rob the Bank 2 is an exceptional game. And now we’re really, really looking forward to playing Rob the Bank 3 in Maldon.
