We were having too much fun to achieve a record time

This weekend we decided to cross county lines to play two games at Sudbury Escape Rooms. First up, our review of the Eerie Motel escape room.

Eerie Motel Escape Room storyline

As night falls, you and your team break into the infamous Route 66 ‘Fabulous Eerie Motel’ lobby, the last known location of the elusive Ragfellow Diamond.

Hidden by the notorious husband and wife criminals while fleeing from the Mafia, this gem is yours for the taking—if you can solve the puzzles in time.

With just one hour on the clock, your adventure is filled with mystery, excitement, and thrills.

But please remember that the motel holds more than secrets; Mr Willis has checked in and is also looking for the diamond. Don’t wake him.

Can you outsmart the puzzles and escape with the diamond?

What did we think of The Eerie Motel escape room in Sudbury?

Eerie Motel has been on our “must play” list for quite a while, so it was a relief when our first impressions were so good. From the moment you step you through the door, you can appreciate the outstanding build quality and attention to detail.

The game starts in the reception area of the Eerie Motel and progresses through several rooms until you reach the final denouement. A lot of thought has been given to theming, and this carries through from beginning to end. Impressive, given how large the playing area is.

As usual, there are a lot of padlocks and combinations. But there are also some quirky puzzles that require somewhat unusual methods to solve. Playing as a pair was funny – playing with a larger team would have been hilarious.

The Eerie Motel escape room works on the one-and-done principle which means you don’t have to re-use anything. However, just because a door opens doesn’t meant mean the previous room is finished. In fact, you will find yourself frequently moving between rooms, so pay attention to everything – it may come in handy later on.

The game finale is particularly amusing – and probably even more so for the games master. The more you buy into the concept of this game, the more you will enjoy the Eerie Motel.

So yes, we found the diamond and escaped. And we had a great time doing so.

Criticisms? Quirks?

There’s nothing to criticise about the Eerie Motel escape room. In fact, it’s easy to see why this particular room was ranked as a “Top Room” in the 2022 edition of the Escape Rooms Project Enthusiasts’ Choice Awards.

As part of the Know Escape Franchise, you will see elements that appear in their other games. There are Easter eggs scattered throughout the playing space that reference other games and characters which is quite amusing.

Sudbury Escape Rooms bill this as a game for up to ten players. However, more than four and you may find yourself running out of space at times.

The Eerie Motel escape room – conclusion

We have waited years to play this room – and the wait was worth it. The team at Sudbury Escape Rooms prove once again that attention to detail and theming is crucial to an above-average game.

The fact we had to ask for two clues is disappointing – but that’s on us. We simply did not pay enough attention and missed some vital information. Our games master was attentive and responsive, so e weren’t left waiting when we needed help.

Eerie Motel is a really well thought out game – and that’s what makes it so much fun. We definitely recommend a visit if you’re ever in the Sudbury area.
