The coolcation travel trend reflects a growing desire among travellers to explore cooler destinations. So while many are heading out to roast themselves on a beach somewhere, others (like us!) would rather go somewhere cooler.
Hence the ‘coolcation’.
So as summer temperatures surge here in the UK, here’s a rundown of potential coolcation destinations to consider. Whether you’re looking for dramatic Arctic landscapes, cool coastal breezes, or alpine adventures, the following destinations offer a welcome respite from the heat – while delivering unforgettable experiences.
Iceland: Land of Ice and Fire
Typical summer temperatures: 10–15°C (50–59°F)
Iceland is renowned for its breathtaking scenery, including glaciers, waterfalls, volcanoes, and geothermal hot springs. The long daylight hours—thanks to the midnight sun—make it possible to explore at almost any hour. Highlights include road-tripping the Ring Road, soaking in the Blue Lagoon, hiking in Landmannalaugar, and whale watching along the coast. Even in summer, layers are recommended, as weather can change quickly.

We’ve visited Iceland in May, July and August and never broken a sweat. Coolcation travel rating: A.
Greenland: Arctic Wilderness and Icebergs
Typical summer temperatures: 5–12°C (41–54°F)
Greenland offers one of the most unique summer escapes in the world. The brief Arctic summer brings 24-hour daylight, dramatic icebergs, and abundant wildlife. Popular activities include hiking along icefjords, kayaking among glaciers, and whale watching in Disko Bay. Ilulissat is a top spot for witnessing giant icebergs, while Qeqertarsuaq offers volcanic landscapes and black sand beaches. Travel is by air or sea, and planning ahead is essential. But the effort is definitely worth it.

We’ve been to Greenland in July and August and would love to visit again one day soon. Coolcation travel rating A++.
Poland: Cool Baltic Coastline
Typical summer temperatures: 18–22°C (64–72°F)
Poland’s Baltic coast, including towns like Sopot, Gdansk, and Kolobrzeg, provides a refreshing European alternative. With mild(er) temperatures, sandy beaches, and charming seaside promenades, it’s perfect for those seeking a comfortable summer by the water. Cycling, hiking, and exploring historic towns are all enjoyable in this cooler climate.

We’ve been to the Baltics in April, June and October and can confirm it gets quite chilly. However, the region is beautiful and largely undiscovered by UK travellers. Which is their loss. Coolcation travel rating; A+.
Bonus tip: If you want to go off the beaten track in Poland, consider a stop in Szczecin.
Other Coolcation Travel Suggestions
The obvious destination for a coolcation would be almost anywhere in the Southern Hemisphere (where it is winter time). Here’s a few long haul alternatives to consider:
- New Zealand (South Island):
Mild summer temperatures, fjords, and alpine scenery in destinations like Queenstown and Fiordland National Park offer endless outdoor adventures. - Argentina (Patagonia):
Cool summers, dramatic landscapes, and world-class trekking opportunities in Torres del Paine and El Chaltén. - Chile (Lake District & Southern Regions):
Lush forests, pristine lakes, and cool temperatures perfect for hiking, kayaking, and relaxation. - Japan (Hokkaido):
Mild summers, flower fields, and national parks provide a refreshing escape from the heat.
Tips for Keeping Cool On Your Coolcation Trip
- Pack smart: Bring layers, waterproof gear, and sun protection. Weather can be highly variable in some destinations (Iceland and Greenland particularly).
- Plan ahead: Book accommodations, tours, and transportation early, especially for remote destinations like Greenland.
- Choose outdoor activities for early morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday sun.
- Embrace nature: Opt for destinations with water features, glaciers, or mountain air for extra refreshment.
Conclusion
Whether you’re drawn to the Arctic wilds of Greenland, the volcanic landscapes of Iceland, the gentle Baltic coast of Poland, or the mountain and fjord regions of New Zealand, Argentina, Chile, and Japan, there are plenty of cool destinations to help you beat the summer heat. Plan your escape and enjoy a summer unlike any other.
I should probably add that we tend to choose cold places to visit during the winter too…
